CLEVELAND, February 10 — The Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad (MBCR) currently has vacant positions for qualified locomotive engineers.

The MBCR is a BLET-represented passenger line in the Boston area. BLET members are asked to share the following job bulletin from MBCR with Brothers and Sisters who may be looking for a position during the current economic downturn.

JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for the safe operation of locomotives and trains in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and corporate policies to transport passengers and equipment safely and efficiently during varying work hours within a 24/7 transportation environment and in varying weather conditions.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Operate various equipment, such as throttle and airbrakes; monitor signals and other devices to safely and efficiently to transport passengers.
* Perform required tests and make inspections of equipment and air brakes as required.
* Must make timely and critical decisions under stressful situations to safeguard lives and property.
* Must possess the ability to think and function independently while maintaining alertness, situational awareness, and vigilance.

* Involves working alone and apart in physical isolation while integrating activities with others.

QUALIFICATIONS/CORE COMPETENCIES:
* Must have high school diploma or GED. Some college or vocational training preferred.
* Prior railroad operating experience and work history that demonstrates ability to adapt to variable and often changing work hours is preferred.
* Preference given to current Class 1 Certified Engineers.
* Applicants with a driver''''''''s license must provide a certified copy of their motor vehicle driving record from the state driver''''''''s licensing agency in which the applicant was last issued a license and any license(s) issued or reissued from other state(s) within the preceding 60 months.
* Applicants must have a motor vehicle driving record void of any convictions or state action canceling, revoking, suspending or denying a driver''''''''s license for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of or impaired by alcohol or a controlled substance within the last 36 months.
* Applicants must sign a release of records authorizing all previous railroad employers to provide MBCR with background information, if applicable. In accordance with FRA regulations, previous railroad service records must be void of any drug and alcohol violations within the previous 60 months.
* Individuals are subject to subject to periodic medical examinations including random drug and alcohol screenings.
* Must have strong verbal communication skills to interact with crewmembers and other personnel responsible for safe and efficient train movement.
* Must have satisfactory work and safety record.
* Individuals will be required to attend training, pass certification tests and demonstrate train handling ability.

EFFORT FACTORS:
1. Physical/ Mental demands
* Work environment can be extremely hot or cold.
* Largely a sedentary occupation.
* Must be capable of operating hand and foot controls simultaneously.
* Must be able to climb ladders and stairs to board and disembark from equipment.
* Must be able to think independently and make timely and critical decisions under stressful situations.
* Must meet the minimum standards for visual acuity (for distant viewing either):
* Distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye without corrective lenses
* Distant visual acuity separately corrected to at least 20/40 (Snellen) with corrective lenses and distant binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes with or without corrective lenses;
* A field of vision of at least 70 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye; and
* The ability to recognize and distinguish between the colors of railroad signals as demonstrated by successfully completing tests.

* Ability to perform all duties mentioned above.

2. Working conditions
* Noise Level — High (diesel engines, air brake equipment, horns and radios).
* Shift work — Differing hours as required.
* Travel — N/A
* On-call — Yes
* Team work — Work as part of the Transportation team.
* Supervisory —No
